What does SUCRE mean in Scrabble?
noun
historical
The former basic unit of currency in Ecuador, used before the country adopted the United States dollar.
Ecuador used the sucre as its national currency for well over a century, dividing it into 100 smaller units called centavos, until a severe economic crisis at the end of the twentieth century led the government to replace it entirely with the United States dollar in the year 2000. The currency took its name from Antonio José de Sucre, a general who fought alongside Simón Bolívar in the wars that won South America's independence from Spain, and whose name is honoured across the region in cities, provinces and institutions as well as this coin. Because Ecuador no longer issues the sucre, the word today belongs mainly to history, economics and collectors of old banknotes and coins rather than to everyday commerce. Some Ecuadorian bank records still reference sucre amounts from before the changeover, giving economists a fixed point for comparing prices across the transition.
