What does CEORL mean in Scrabble?
noun
historical
A free peasant of Anglo-Saxon England, ranking above enslaved people and other unfree labourers but below the nobility.
A ceorl owned or worked his own land, could carry weapons, and took part in local courts and the raising of the fyrd, the local levy of fighting men, unlike unfree workers who had none of these rights. A particularly successful ceorl who acquired enough land could sometimes rise to the rank of thegn, showing that the class was not entirely fixed. Over time the word survived into Middle English as churl, which gradually took on a negative sense of a rude or ill mannered person.
