What does VAREC mean in Scrabble?
noun
chemistryhistorical
Seaweed, especially kelp, gathered and burned to produce ash used historically in the manufacture of soda and iodine; also, the seaweed itself.
Varec refers both to certain coarse seaweeds, particularly kelp, and to the ash left after burning great quantities of it, a substance once valued as a raw material for making soda and, later, iodine. Coastal communities in parts of France and the Channel Islands gathered varec along the shore and burned it in shallow pits, a smoky and labour-intensive industry that flourished before cheaper chemical methods replaced it in the nineteenth century. The word entered English from French, where it is closely related to wrack, another old term for seaweed cast up on the shore. Today varec survives mainly in historical accounts of coastal industry rather than in ordinary conversation about seaweed.
