The name tolar echoes the older word thaler, from which dollar itself ultimately descends, and the coin filled the gap left when Slovenia broke away from the Yugoslav dinar. Like most currencies it was divided into smaller units, one hundred stotins to a tolar, for prices too small to need a whole coin. Slovenian banknotes and coins denominated in tolar are no longer legal tender but are still traded and collected by numismatists. Older Slovenian speakers sometimes still quote prices informally in tolar out of habit even though the currency has not circulated for years.
