What does TELEX mean in Scrabble?
noun
historicaltechnical
A system, once widely used by businesses and governments, for sending typed messages directly between teleprinter machines over a telephone or telegraph network.
Before fax machines and email became common, a telex let one office send a printed message straight to a machine in another office anywhere in the world, with no operator needed to read a message aloud over a phone line. Each subscriber to the telex network had an identifying number, much like a phone number, that let messages be routed correctly. Businesses relied on telex for decades because it produced a printed, and therefore legally reliable, record of what had been sent and received. The network declined sharply once fax machines and, later, the internet offered faster and cheaper ways to exchange written messages.
