Writers once used curtal for anything trimmed down from its normal size, from a docked-tailed horse to an abbreviated speech, and the word shares its Latin root with the more familiar verb curtail. The same root also produced two old nouns: a curtal was a horse or dog with a shortened tail, and separately the name of an early wind instrument, a short double-reed forerunner of the bassoon. The best-known use today survives in old ballads about a curtal friar, a monk whose short cloak gave him the name.
