Amidol works without the alkali that most developers need, so it can be mixed in a mild sulphite solution and gives deep, neutral blacks on paper. Darkroom printers favoured amidol for contact prints and warm-toned enlargements through much of the twentieth century. The solution does not keep for long once mixed, which is why printers made it fresh on the day of use.
