A short, skirt-like piece of plate armour made of overlapping metal bands, worn hanging from the waist to protect the hips and upper thighs.
A tonlet was fitted below the breastplate of a suit of armour and consisted of several horizontal, overlapping steel bands riveted together so that the wearer could still bend and move at the hip. Armourers of the sixteenth century produced especially elaborate tonlets for ceremonial and tournament armour, sometimes flaring outward like a short metal skirt. The design gradually disappeared as plate armour itself fell out of use on the battlefield.
