What does THANE mean in Scrabble?
noun
historical
In Anglo-Saxon England and medieval Scotland, a nobleman who held land granted by the king in return for military service, ranking above an ordinary freeman and below a hereditary noble.
An Anglo-Saxon thane owed loyalty and military service to the king in exchange for the land he governed, occupying a rank between the common freeman and the higher nobility, roughly comparable to a baron in the feudal system that followed the Norman Conquest. In medieval Scotland the title survived somewhat differently, naming a local lord, often the head of a clan, who administered land on the king's behalf and ranked close to an earl's son. The title is now most familiar to modern readers through literature, especially Shakespeare's Macbeth, whose central character rises from Thane of Glamis to Thane of Cawdor before seizing the crown itself. After the Conquest reorganised landholding in England, the title thane fell out of use there, while it lingered longer in Scottish tradition before eventually fading from active use.
