Terai takes its name from the Terai, the belt of marshy lowland running along the foot of the Himalayas, where travellers first adopted this style of hat against the heat. The double crown left an air space between two layers of felt, which helped keep the head cooler than a single layer would. Colonial officials and hunters across South Asia and parts of Africa made the terai a familiar sight in nineteenth and early twentieth century travel writing. Few people wear one today, and the word now turns up mostly in descriptions of period clothing.
