historical
A small round shield, especially one carried by Scottish Highland warriors.
A targe was light enough to be strapped to the forearm and was often studded with metal bosses or spikes, giving the bearer both protection and a means of striking an opponent. It is closely associated with Highland Scottish fighters, who carried the targe alongside a broadsword and dirk into battle well into the eighteenth century. The word survives today mainly in historical writing and museum descriptions of traditional weapons and armour.
