What does SUTTEE mean in Scrabble?
noun
historical
A widow who died on her husband's funeral pyre in old Hindu practice, and the colonial English name for the practice itself.
Suttee named both the act of self-immolation and, sometimes, the widow who carried it out, and it was treated in traditional accounts as proof of a wife's devotion rather than as tragedy. The practice was outlawed by British colonial authorities in India in the nineteenth century, so the word now belongs mainly to history and to discussion of colonial-era reform. It comes from a Sanskrit word meaning a virtuous or faithful wife, which is also the source of the alternative spelling sati.
