A tete towered above the head on a wire frame and was built up with the wearer's own hair, false hair, and stiffening pomade, so that ships, gardens, or other scenes could be arranged on top as a fashion statement. The style was worn at the French court before falling out of favour, and the word survives now mainly in books about the history of costume and hairdressing.
