What does STOURE mean in Scrabble?
noun
archaicScots
Dust raised in the air, or a state of turmoil and commotion.
Stoure began as a plain word for blowing dust, the kind kicked up by cart wheels or a hard wind on a dry road, and Scots writers still use it that way. From dust it broadened into a figurative sense of noise, bustle and struggle, so a battle or a busy market could equally be described as a stoure. Robert Burns and other Scots poets favoured the word for its earthy sound, and it survives today mainly in Scots dialect and in literary imitations of it. Southern English speakers rarely use stoure at all, which keeps the word feeling distinctly regional.
