What does SHIVE mean in Scrabble?
noun
technical
A thin, flat piece of cork or wood used as a stopper or bung to seal a hole in a cask or barrel.
Brewers and coopers have long used a shive to close the hole bored into the head of a wooden cask, allowing the contents to be sealed until the barrel is tapped for use. A smaller hole is often drilled through the centre of the shive itself, fitted with a secondary peg called a spile, which can be removed to release pressure without disturbing the main seal. The word is also used in an older, more general sense for a thin slice, particularly of bread, and for a small splinter or fragment of straw or flax stalk left over from processing fibre. Because casks of this kind are less common today, shive survives mainly in traditional brewing, cider-making and coopering.
How SHIVE is used
A specialised term from traditional brewing and coopering, rarely met outside descriptions of cask-conditioned drinks.
- The cellarman tapped a spile into the shive before serving the ale.
- A wooden shive kept the barrel sealed during transport.
- The cooper cut a new shive to fit the damaged cask.
- He loosened the shive slightly to let the cask breathe.
- Old brewing manuals describe how to fit a shive correctly.
