What does SERAC mean in Scrabble?
noun
technical
A tall, sharp pinnacle or ridge of ice formed where a glacier fractures as it moves over uneven ground.
A serac forms when the slow-moving ice of a glacier is stretched and cracked by the uneven rock beneath it, splitting the surface into towering blocks and jagged pillars. These ice towers are notoriously unstable, since the same forces that created them keep shifting the ice beneath, and a serac can collapse without warning onto anyone passing below. Mountaineers crossing an icefall try to move quickly through areas thick with serac, timing their crossing for the coldest part of the day when the ice is least likely to shift. The French word for the ice formation was borrowed directly into English mountaineering vocabulary, without any accepted native equivalent.
