What does SALLET mean in Scrabble?
noun
historical
A light medieval helmet, often with a curved tail at the back to protect the neck.
A sallet was a lightweight helmet worn by soldiers and knights of the fifteenth century, shaped to curve outward at the back so it shielded the wearer's neck without the weight of a full great helm. Some sallets came fitted with a hinged visor that dropped down to protect the face, while simpler versions left the eyes and lower face open for better vision in combat. English borrowed the word from French forms such as salade and salet, all ultimately from the same Italian root. Armourers eventually replaced the sallet with heavier close helmets as plate armour continued to evolve.
