What does PESETA mean in Scrabble?
noun
historical
Spain's coin and note before the euro, counted in 100 centimos and still quoted in older prices.
The peseta served as Spain's official currency for well over a century, divided into one hundred smaller units called centimos, much as a pound divides into pence. Spain adopted the euro alongside most of its European neighbours at the start of 2002, and the peseta stopped being legal tender soon after, surviving now mainly in coin collections and older price references. The name comes from a diminutive of peso, reflecting its status as a smaller unit of account within the wider Spanish-speaking monetary tradition. Older films, novels and travel writing set in twentieth-century Spain still price goods in pesetas.
