What does PADLE mean in Scrabble?
noun
Scotsdialect
A dialect name, chiefly Scots, for the lumpsucker, a thick-bodied sea fish with a sucker-like disc on its underside.
Fishermen along the Scottish coast use padle as a local name for the lumpsucker, a rounded, spiny sea fish that clings to rocks with a sucking disc formed from its fused pelvic fins. The fish is also widely known simply as the lumpfish, and its roe is sold commercially as a cheaper substitute for caviar. Padle survives mainly in older dialect glossaries and regional fishing vocabulary rather than in everyday standard English, where lumpsucker or lumpfish is far more common. The word is unrelated to the ordinary verb paddle, despite the similar spelling and sound.
How PADLE is used

- The old fisherman still called the lumpsucker a padle.
- A padle was hauled up tangled in the net.
- Local recipes once used roe from the padle as a cheap caviar.
- The glossary listed padle beside its more common name, lumpfish.
- Few younger islanders now recognise the word padle.
