What does LIARD mean in Scrabble?
noun
historical
A former French and Belgian copper coin of very low value, worth a small fraction of a sou.
Liard was a small copper coin once used in France and the Low Countries, worth only a quarter of a sou and therefore a byword for something of trifling value. The coin gave rise to expressions about something not being worth a liard, much as an English speaker might say something is not worth a penny. Liard coins were minted in large numbers for everyday small transactions before decimal currency reforms swept them away in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Today the word liard survives mainly in histories of French coinage and in older literature that mentions everyday prices of the period.
