What does GREGO mean in Scrabble?
noun
historicalnautical
A short, hooded jacket made of thick, coarse cloth, traditionally worn by sailors and other people around the eastern Mediterranean.
A grego was cut heavy and close-fitting to keep out wind and spray, with an attached hood that could be pulled up in bad weather, making it practical wear for sailors working on open decks. The garment took its name from its association with Greek dress, since Mediterranean sailors and travellers of many nationalities adopted a similar cut of coarse hooded coat. Today the word survives mainly in older travel writing and historical accounts of nineteenth-century seafaring rather than in modern clothing.
