What does GINGAL mean in Scrabble?
noun
historical
A large musket or small cannon mounted on a swivel, formerly used in China and India, especially for defending forts or ships.
A gingal was too heavy to fire from the shoulder and was instead fixed on a swivel or forked rest, letting defenders aim and fire the weapon in different directions. Colonial-era accounts describe gingals mounted along fort walls and on the decks of river boats in China and India as an intermediate weapon between a musket and a cannon. The word is also spelled gingall, jingal, or jingall in older military and travel writing, all naming the same swivel gun. Such weapons largely disappeared from use once more modern rifles and light artillery became widely available in the nineteenth century.
