What does ELEGIT mean in Scrabble?
noun
legalhistorical
A judicial writ that allowed a creditor to take possession of a debtor's goods and land until an unpaid debt was satisfied.
An elegit let a court hand over part of a losing defendant's property to the winning creditor, who could then hold and use it, collecting rents and profits, until the original debt was paid off. The name comes directly from Latin, where elegit means he has chosen, referring to the creditor's choice of this particular remedy over other forms of execution. The writ belonged to English common law procedure and has since been replaced by modern methods of enforcing a debt judgment.
