What does DAIMYO mean in Scrabble?
noun
historical
A powerful regional lord of feudal Japan who held large estates and commanded samurai warriors.
Under the shogun, each daimyo governed his own domain, collected rice taxes from the farmers and kept a private army of retainers. The title carried real political weight from the medieval period until the domains were abolished in the nineteenth century. A daimyo was required to spend part of each year at the shogun's capital, which kept him close to central authority. The word is borrowed straight from Japanese, where it literally means a great name.
