Cannel is a variety of bituminous coal, compact and fine-grained rather than layered like ordinary coal, so it can be cut and polished almost like stone. Its name is thought to come from a dialect pronunciation of candle, because a lump of cannel held to a flame lights up much like a candle wick. Nineteenth century industry burned cannel to produce coal gas for lighting, and jewelers sometimes carved small ornaments from the polished stone. Today the word survives mainly in geology and in historical descriptions of early gas lighting.
