What does BARBE mean in Scrabble?

noun

historical

A piece of pleated white linen or lace worn around the neck and under the chin, especially by nuns as part of their habit or, in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, as part of formal mourning dress.

Nuns of certain orders wore the barbe folded closely under the chin and pinned to the wimple, so that only a narrow band of white cloth framed the lower part of the face beneath the veil. Court mourning dress of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries adapted the same idea for laywomen, who wore a barbe drawn up over the chin as a visible sign of grief, with the height to which it was worn sometimes indicating the closeness of the relationship to the deceased. Portrait painters of the period recorded the barbe carefully, since its exact style and position could reveal a sitter's rank or degree of mourning to viewers of the time. Costume historians and museum curators now use barbe mainly to describe surviving portraits and garments from this specific period of European dress.

How BARBE is used

A historical costume term, used chiefly by costume historians and in descriptions of religious habits and formal mourning dress of past centuries.
