What does BALATA mean in Scrabble?
noun
botany
A tough, rubber-like gum obtained from the sap of a tropical evergreen tree, once widely used for machine belting and golf ball covers.
Balata comes from the latex of a large tropical American tree of the same name, which is tapped much like a rubber tree and then processed into a firm, less elastic gum. Because it resists stretching better than natural rubber, balata was long favoured for industrial drive belts and, for much of the twentieth century, for the covers of golf balls, where it gave a softer feel prized by skilled players. Modern golf balls mostly use synthetic materials instead, so the word now turns up more often in older manuals and in descriptions of traditional or vintage sporting equipment. The tree itself also bears edible fruit and durable timber in addition to its gum.
How BALATA is used
A specialist term from botany and manufacturing, most often met in older or technical descriptions of golf equipment and industrial belting.
- The old drive belt was made of tough balata rather than plain rubber.
- Golfers of an earlier generation preferred the soft feel of a balata ball.
- Balata is tapped from the tree in much the same way as natural rubber.
- The catalogue listed balata covers as an upgrade over synthetic ones.
- Balata gum hardens as it dries, unlike fresh natural latex.
