Type what the game has told you so far. Green letters are in the right spot, yellow letters are in the word but somewhere else, grey letters are not in the word at all.

About the word list. We do not have Wordle’s own word list yet, so this searches our Scrabble dictionary instead. Most answers are in there, but you may see rare words that Wordle will not accept — and, less often, a valid Wordle answer may be missing. We default to the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary, which is the closest of our four lists to everyday English.

A yellow letter also tells you where the letter is not. Put it under that position and we will drop those words too.

How to use it

What makes one guess better than another

Once you have a couple of greens, the list of possible answers is usually short, and the temptation is to guess the first word on it. That is often the wrong move. A guess is worth what it eliminates, not what it might be: with five candidates that differ only in one position, a word that tests three of those letters at once tells you the answer even if it is not the answer.

That is why the results here are ordered by how much each word narrows the field rather than alphabetically, and why the results page also lists the letters still worth testing. Late in a puzzle, when you have two guesses and three candidates, that block is the difference between solving it and losing on a coin flip.

Position rules are the part most people skip

A yellow letter carries two facts, not one: the letter is in the word, and it is not in the square you played it. The second fact is worth as much as the first, and typing it into Position rules routinely cuts the candidate list in half. If you only enter the yellow letters and not where they cannot be, you are throwing away half of what the puzzle already told you.

Common questions

Does this tell me today's answer? No, and it does not try to. This searches the five-letter words we hold for the ones that fit the clues you have already earned. We do not publish daily answers — if you wanted the answer handed over you would not be playing.

Why does it suggest a word that is not a real Wordle answer? Wordle accepts far more words as guesses than it ever uses as answers, and the answer list is curated by hand. A guess only has to be accepted to be useful, so the solver treats every valid five-letter word as a candidate. See the Wordle list page for what we hold.

Can I use it for other five-letter games? Yes. Anything that gives you green, yellow and grey feedback on five letters works the same way, and so does this.
