The hunter holds the stick in one hand, hooks the end of the spear against a peg on it and swings, which lengthens the arm and sends the spear much farther and faster than a bare throw. Early European visitors to New South Wales wrote the word in several ways, and womera is one of the older spellings. It is the same tool as the better-known woomera, which also gave its name to a rocket range in South Australia.
