The takhi is stocky, dun-coloured, and carries a short erect mane rather than the falling mane of the domestic horse. It once ranged across Central Asia but died out in the wild by the late twentieth century, surviving only in zoos. Captive-bred takhi have since been reintroduced to protected reserves in Mongolia, so the wild population today is descended entirely from those zoo herds.
