Stalag is a shortened German term, from Stammlager, for a camp holding ordinary soldiers and non-commissioned officers, as opposed to an oflag, which held officers. The word entered English through the accounts and memoirs of Allied prisoners held in such camps between 1939 and 1945. It now appears mainly in history books, war memoirs and films set in that period rather than in current military use.
