What does SOLUS mean in Scrabble?
adjective
archaicliterary
Alone, especially of a man; a Latin-derived word once used in English stage directions to show that a character is alone on stage.
Solus comes directly from Latin and was borrowed into English mainly for the theatre, where an old script might read Enter Hamlet, solus to tell the actor and reader that the character has no one else on stage with him. The feminine form sola was used in the same way for a woman appearing alone. Outside this specialised stage-direction use, solus survives only rarely, mostly as a deliberately old-fashioned or learned way of saying alone.
How SOLUS is used
A rare, old-fashioned word met chiefly in older play scripts as a stage direction, and occasionally in learned or literary writing.
- The old script noted Enter the king, solus, before his soliloquy.
- He stood solus at the edge of the stage, addressing the empty hall.
- The director restored the archaic solus to the printed stage directions.
- A solus entrance meant the actor had the stage entirely to himself.
- The professor explained why solus, not sola, applied to the male role.
