What does SISAL mean in Scrabble?
noun
botany
A stiff, durable fiber obtained from the leaves of the agave plant Agave sisalana, widely spun into rope, twine, matting and rugs; also the plant itself.
Workers strip the long, sword-shaped leaves of the sisal plant and crush them to extract the tough fibers, which resist saltwater and stretching far better than many natural alternatives, making sisal a favored material for a ship's rope before synthetic fibers took over. The plant takes its name from the Mexican port of Sisal, from which the fiber was once shipped to the rest of the world, even though it is grown far more widely today in East Africa and Brazil. Beyond rope, sisal fiber is now woven into carpets, rugs and coarse fabric prized for its natural, textured look.
