What does SATEM mean in Scrabble?
adjective
Belonging to the branch of Indo-European languages, including Slavic, Baltic, Indo-Iranian, Armenian and Albanian, in which certain ancient sounds developed into s or sh-like sounds.
Linguists sort the Indo-European language family into two broad groups based on how a particular set of ancient consonants changed over time, and satem languages are the branch where those sounds shifted toward s or sh, as opposed to the centum languages, which include Latin, Greek and the Germanic languages, where the same sounds stayed closer to a k sound. The name satem itself is taken from the Avestan word for the number hundred, chosen because it shows the very sound shift the group is named after, just as centum is the Latin word for the same number and represents the opposite pattern. The satem-centum split does not map neatly onto geography in every case, which is one reason historical linguists treat it as a useful but imperfect way of grouping the family. Russian, Persian and Sanskrit are commonly cited examples of satem languages.
