What does PINGO mean in Scrabble?
noun
technical
A large, dome-shaped mound of earth-covered ice found in Arctic and subarctic regions, formed when underground water freezes and pushes the overlying soil upward.
A pingo grows slowly as water trapped beneath a layer of frozen ground turns to ice and expands, lifting the earth above it into a rounded hill that can reach several metres in height and persist for centuries. Geographers borrowed the word pingo from the Inuktitut language, where it originally named exactly this kind of ice-cored hill on the tundra. When the ice core inside a pingo eventually melts, the mound can collapse into a bowl-shaped hollow called a pingo scar, a feature geologists use to trace where permafrost once thrived. Because pingos depend on continuously frozen ground, their distribution offers scientists a useful clue to past and present permafrost conditions.
