To perform an ollie, a skater stamps down sharply on the tail of the board while sliding the front foot up the deck, which pops the board off the ground and lets it follow the rider into the air. It is considered the foundation trick of modern skateboarding, since almost every jump over a gap, onto a rail, or down a set of stairs builds on the same motion. The trick is named after the rider Alan Gelfand, nicknamed Ollie, who first performed it in the 1970s, though the word is now used as an ordinary common noun and verb rather than as anyone's name. Skaters also use ollie as a verb, saying they ollie over a curb or a crack in the pavement.
