The okapi has a long neck and large ears like its relative the giraffe, but its neck is far shorter and its body is closer in size to a horse. The pale stripes on its upper legs break up its outline among the trees and help it stay hidden from predators such as leopards. It lives only in the dense forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo and was unknown to Western science until the early twentieth century. Because of habitat loss, the okapi is now considered endangered in the wild.
