Norite forms deep underground as magma cools slowly, which gives it the same large, visible mineral grains found in gabbro, its closer chemical relative. Geologists tell the two apart mainly by which pyroxene mineral dominates the rock, with norite defined by hypersthene rather than the augite typical of ordinary gabbro. The rock often occurs alongside deposits of nickel and platinum-group metals, which makes some norite formations economically important for mining. Large bodies of norite have been mapped in Scandinavia, Canada and South Africa, usually as part of bigger igneous complexes.
