A moulin forms where a stream of surface meltwater finds a crack in glacier ice and gradually widens it into a deep, well-like shaft. Water can drop many metres through a moulin before reaching channels at the base of the glacier, carrying heat and speeding the internal drainage of the ice. Glaciologists study moulins because the water they funnel downward can lubricate the bed and affect how fast the whole ice mass slides. The name comes from the French word for mill, after the swirling, grinding sound the falling water makes.
