The litas was reintroduced after Lithuania regained independence from the Soviet Union, replacing the Soviet rouble as the country's own national currency. Coins and notes denominated in litas circulated for more than two decades before Lithuania joined the eurozone and withdrew the litas from everyday use. Older price tags and bank records from that period still show amounts in litas.
