What does KRANG mean in Scrabble?
noun
nauticalhistorical
The carcass of a whale left after the blubber has been removed.
Once whalers had stripped away the blubber for boiling into oil, what remained was mostly bone, meat and connective tissue, and this krang was usually cut loose and left to sink or drift. A krang was worth little to nineteenth-century whaling crews compared with the oil-rich blubber already taken, so it was rarely brought aboard. Some Arctic and Antarctic accounts describe a floating krang drawing large numbers of scavenging birds to the water around a ship. The word krang survives today mainly in historical writing about the whaling industry rather than in ordinary speech.
How KRANG is used
Nautical and historical; met in accounts of the whaling industry, rarely used outside that context.
- The crew cut the blubber away and let the krang drift off the ship.
- Gulls followed the ship for days, drawn by the floating krang.
- Old whaling logs record the size of each krang left behind.
- A krang could still weigh many tons even with the blubber gone.
- Historians studying whaling ships often mention the fate of the krang.
