A jagir was land, or the right to collect its taxes, that a ruler handed to a noble, soldier, or official instead of paying wages in cash. The holder of a jagir, called a jagirdar, kept the income from the land while owing loyalty and service back to the ruler who granted it. The system was widespread under Mughal rule in India and lingered in some princely states long afterward. Modern land reform ended the practice, so jagir now belongs mainly to history and to discussions of pre-colonial South Asian administration.
