What does IROKO mean in Scrabble?
noun
botany
A large West African hardwood tree, or the durable yellowish-brown timber it produces, often used as a substitute for teak.
Iroko grows tall across the forests of tropical West and Central Africa and is valued for timber that resists rot, insects, and weather almost as well as true teak, at a fraction of the cost. Furniture makers, shipbuilders, and outdoor carpenters use iroko for exactly this durability, and the wood darkens attractively as it ages and is exposed to light. In parts of West African tradition the tree itself has long been regarded with particular respect, sometimes considered the dwelling place of a spirit, which historically discouraged felling certain old specimens. Both the living tree and the finished timber are commonly called iroko without any change in the word.
How IROKO is used
