The grison belongs to the same family as weasels, otters and badgers, and it hunts small animals on the ground much as its relatives do, though it is bulkier than a common weasel. Its most recognizable feature is a band of pale grey fur running across the forehead and down the sides, contrasting sharply with the dark fur of the rest of its body. It ranges from Mexico down through much of South America, favouring forests and scrubland where it can den in burrows or hollow logs. Older naturalists sometimes also used the name for a South American monkey, but the mustelid is the meaning kept in modern dictionaries.
