Gossan forms when pyrite and other sulfide minerals near the surface of an ore vein oxidize and break down, leaving behind a crust stained red, brown or yellow by iron oxide. Prospectors have long treated a gossan outcrop as a visible sign that a metal deposit, often copper or lead, might lie underneath, so old mining districts are dotted with pits dug into gossan. The word is also spelled gozzan in older geological writing. Outside geology and mining the word is essentially unknown.
