A forme was the finished jigsaw of metal type, spacing and illustration blocks that a compositor locked tightly inside a rectangular frame called a chase, so the whole page could be inked and pressed in one go. Getting a forme ready involved arranging every line by hand and wedging it fast with wooden quoins, because a single loose piece could fall out and spoil the run. The word is simply the older British spelling of form used specifically for this stage of the printing trade, and it survives today mainly in histories of the press.
