The number of days by which the solar year exceeds the lunar year, used to calculate the date of Easter and other movable feasts.
An epact is worked out afresh for each year and tracks how far the cycle of lunar months has drifted from the solar calendar, since twelve lunar months fall short of a full solar year by roughly eleven days. Church authorities used the epact for centuries to work out the date of the next new moon and, from that, the date of Easter, which depends on the first full moon after the spring equinox. The word comes from the Greek epaktos, meaning brought in or added, referring to the extra days inserted to keep the two calendars in step.
