Elchi entered English from a Turkish word for messenger, carried in through European accounts of embassies to Constantinople in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Older sources also spell it elchee or eltchi, and history books used it for whoever the Sultan's court sent to negotiate with a foreign power. The spelling never became a general English term for a diplomat, and it now appears almost only in older travel writing and history.
