What does DWALE mean in Scrabble?
noun
archaicbotany
An old name for deadly nightshade, or a soporific drink or stupor formerly brought on by that plant.
Dwale named the deadly nightshade plant, Atropa belladonna, whose berries and roots were once used, often dangerously, to prepare drinks that dulled pain or induced sleep before anaesthetics existed. From this practice, dwale also came to mean the drowsy, stupefied state such a draught produced, and by extension any deep, dazed sleep. The word survives mainly in older herbals, historical fiction, and discussions of medieval medicine.
