A long Turkish outer robe open in front, or a woman's loose cloak with wide, cape-like sleeves.
The name came into European languages from Turkish, where it described a robe worn with a sash. The hussar's jacket worn hung over one shoulder carried the same name. In the later nineteenth century the word was applied to a fashionable woman's wrap cut with sleeves made in one piece with the body, a style also used for a dolman sleeve.
